National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) aims to support early-career graduate students in science and engineering in the United States. Receiving this fellowship provides 1) 5 years of support, 2) a $37,000 annual stipend, 3) $12,000 tuition coverage, and 4) international research and professional development opportunities. Typical deadlines are provided below (subject to change in the coming year):
NIH F31 Ruth L. Kirschstein Predoctoral Individual National Research Service Award: NIH fellowship that funds predoctoral research in the biomedical, behavioral, health services, or clinical sciences. This provides 1) maximum 5 years of support, 2) $27,000 annual stipend, 3) $16,000 tuition coverage, 4) $2500 annual childcare costs per request, and 5) research and professional development opportunities. Reminder that this form will be completed through the VCU RAMS-Spot (discuss with your advisor), not the actual NIH website.
Supports 3rd and 4th year PhD/ doctoral candidates (who have finished all degree requirements except their dissertation) to complete dissertation research training (F99) and transition to a cancer-focused postdoctoral career (K00). This provides up to 6 years of total support: 2 years during candidacy and 4 years postdoctoral position. Applications are submitted through VCU, so ask your advisor if you have interest!
NIH-funded training grant focused on increasing fundamental and clinical research in the areas of kidney, urology, and hematology, where there is a shortage of the workforce to advance scientific discoveries and technology. This program provides up to 2 years of tuition, stipend and travel support for first and second year PhD students, and for postdoctoral fellows. We are developing a collaborative and integrated partnership involving the three major research training centers in the Commonwealth of Virginia, UVA, VCU and Virginia Tech.

Supports 1-2 years of graduate school for immigrants/ children of immigrants. Can apply during application to graduate school and the first 2 years in your program.
Focused on research (Master and PhD) that shows potential in reducing, replacing, or refining the use of animals in research, testing, and/or education. Provides up to $12,500 annually in support of tuition/ salary that can be renewed up to 3 years dependent on student progress. The application process is broken into 2 steps, a pre-proposal that will be reviewed by IFER and full proposal.

Focused on providing graduate fellowships in the various disciplines of engineering. The students must be citizens of the United States (either native born or naturalized), have successfully passed their qualifying exams and express an interest in a research career within academia, industry or government in the United States.
