The VCU Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) is a selective one-year scholarship program that recognizes and supports the development and engagement of emerging student leaders at the university. Spaces in the Emerging Leaders Program are granted to 50 highly-qualified incoming first-year students.

Selected ELP students will take part in a first-year leadership experience through curricular and co-curricular programs that aim to develop young leaders. The program will match a first-year student with a second-year mentor who will guide them throughout their first-year at VCU and throughout their ELP leadership experience.

But most importantly, the Emerging Leaders Program becomes a tight-knit family of students who live, learn, and grow together and helps kick starts their journey to leadership and success at VCU and beyond!

The mission of the Department of History is the advancement of the study of the past through research and the training of undergraduates and graduate students in our discipline. The department fosters a level of research and professional activity essential to the graduate program (M.A. in history and public history certificate) and to the professional growth of faculty. The department provides majors and graduate students with a variety of courses and research experiences that prepare them for a range of professional careers. It also provides courses to other majors who require a history foundation, as well as general education courses to all VCU students who wish to become more knowledgeable about the past. The department is committed to enhancing diversity among its faculty, staff, and students. Finally, department faculty have a responsibility to provide service to their profession and to the university community.
