About Us

The Big Event at VCU is a student-run service project where Rams come together to say "Thank You" to the residents of Richmond. VCU Student Government Association is excited to provide leadership and vision for a new tradition that shows our appreciation to the surrounding community, sharing information about local mutual aid organizations, and accepting donations to distribute to our neighbors. We share in the mission of similar programs throughout the nation - "One Big Help, One Big Day."

The Big Event at VCU operates through an abolitionist lens where we envision a world based on radical freedom, mutual accountability, and passionate reciprocity.

2021 Recap

A brief recap of 2021 TBE!

With VCU's campus being directly intertwined with the city of Richmond, I believe that students should be active in the community and that is why I love The Big Event. Even with the pandemic we were really excited to figure out how to safely engage with the community through mutual aid!

As TBE evolves, we've been able to shift our focus to directly collaborate with the community instead of for it. TBE is truly a celebration of community and I can't wait for more days like it!

Being a part of the amazing leadership team bringing The Big Event together again for VCU was so fulfilling. Being a Richmond native, I have always been involved in giving back to my community, so the Big Event felt extra special to me. From the beginning of planning for the 2021 Big Event, we knew that with the pandemic, it was even more important to have this event. Being able to successfully launch this event online, give back through mutual aids and get student involvement was so powerful. I was so excited to learn about this tradition and can't wait to see this event continue. Seeing all the ways we as a student body can give back to our home is so rewarding.

When we were challenged with planning The Big Event amidst a pandemic, we quickly realized mutual aid was the best event for our community. I am excited to be apart of leadership that saw TBE transform into a new model that places an emphasis on mutual aid and community!

It is important that as VCU students we are cognizant of the city we occupy and actively learn about how to mutually participate. My goal with TBE is to make the education process accessible and fun!
