Congratulations on all the hard work you’ve put in this semester––we’re almost to the finish line! In these last few weeks before break, FILL Peer Mentors will be available for in-person consultation appointments (made through Navigate) and walk-ins through the last day of classes, Monday, December 12. This weekend, consultations on Zoom (appointments made through Navigate required) will still be offered.
The FILL space (Harris 5116) will be open during regular hours (8 a.m.–5 p.m. on weekdays) through Wednesday, December 21. It’s a great place to study during finals, especially when the library gets crowded and you find it hard to be productive when working in your bedroom! Don’t forget we have computers available for you to use!
The FILL will reopen and resume regular hours after the holidays on Monday, January 9. Peer Mentors will be available for consultations in Spring 2023 beginning the second week of classes.
Open House Happenings at The FILL
It was a particularly gloomy (and rainy) day last Wednesday, but that didn’t stop us from hosting our open house! Students were invited to warm themselves with a cup of hot cocoa or tea and to strike up a round of Uno or Jenga with their peers. We had a good time, and we hope you did as well! If you missed us this time around, be on the lookout for events like this in the future, and feel free to stop by the FILL (Harris 5116) at any time during our open hours to see what we’re up to!
Focused Inquiry and You Beyond This Fall
Many of you will be moving on to another Focused Inquiry course in the Spring, UNIV 112 or UNIV 200. But if this happens to be your last semester with the program, we encourage you to stay connected by joining The FILL's RamsConnect group. As a contact, you'll continue to receive the ReFILL newsletter and updates about events at The FILL.
Did you know there are other Focused Inquiry courses besides UNIV 111, 112, and 200? Notably, there's UNIV 299: What's the Big Idea?, which can fulfill core and general education requirements for VCU students. Each section of this three-credit interdisciplinary course will focus on a particular “big question” that has intrigued thinkers throughout time and across cultures. As students move from personal to global—and from theoretical to practical—investigations of the question, they will come to understand inquiry as a complex cycle of questioning, gathering, examining, interpreting, comparing, analyzing and evaluating, with important application to decision-making and problem-solving in the real world.
Below is a list of upcoming sections of UNIV 299. For a longer description of each section's “big idea,” visit this webpage.
