Subject: Not an April Fool's Prank: Leadership Applications Now Open!

Tl;dr: 2023-24 leadership applications now open- deadline to submit is April 21st at 11:59pm (link to form and paper version). Summer externships: flyer, positions, and application. May 2023 graduates, please fill out the VCU First Destination Survey for a chance to win a variety of prizes. See below for upcoming events and helpful resources.

Hi all,

Happy Saturday (and April Fool's Day)! We hope you're still grinding away in all your classes. You should add one more thing to your to-do list: applying for an SEA leadership position for the 2023-24 academic year!

The roles are very flexible, and they are NOT limited to the positions listed. If there's another position you'd like to hold, please include it in your application and we'll see what we can do. Nothing crazy of course (we probably don't need an official snake milker or anything like that- but if you can make a case we’re open to it!)

We know that schedules are full, but we are of the belief that you get out what you put in. If you're looking to do more, SEA would benefit greatly from your involvement. And if your calendar is looking pretty full, we would appreciate any time and help we can get! It's a very good resume builder and will allow you to work closer with other economics students. We're hoping for big things next year, and with your help we can make it happen!

So, we hope we've made a compelling argument as to why you should consider applying for a leadership position with SEA. Applications can be submitted electronically via this form, and hard copies can be dropped off at Professor Stratton’s office in Snead Hall room B3179 or emailed to the.econ.club@gmail.com.

*The deadline for applications is Friday, April 21st at 11:59pm.*

Personal statements will be e-mailed to all those on the SEA mailing list and posted for all interested parties to see on the club’s website. Voting will take place during the week of April 24-28th, with results announced the following Monday (May 1st). We'll be holding an interest/informational meeting on Monday, April 10th around 7pm- details about this meeting TBA!

Summer Externships:

Externships differ from internships in that externships generally last a few days and thus are low in time commitment. They allow students to experience an insider view of the workplace, ain practical knowledge, develop networking connections, and discover what economics majors can do. See the list of position descriptions and informational flyer for details.

Apply here!

Attention May 2023 Graduates:

Would you like to win prizes for sharing your post-graduation plans? Here’s your chance to win big! Fill out the VCU First Destination Survey and be entered to win a variety of prizes!

If you have any questions we’re always happy to answer them- just shoot us an email at the.econ.club@gmail.com!

Take care,
SEA

P.S. In honor of the holiday, have a free joke from Planet Money (a fantastic and informative podcast you should try listening to):

Have you heard the one about the two men in a hot air balloon? They were flying over the countryside when they got completely lost. As they drifted low over a field, they spotted a man in a suit standing on the road below. Desperate for directions, they called down and asked where they were. The man in the suit looked up and replied, "You're in a balloon." One of the men in the balloon immediately quipped, "You're obviously an economist." The man proudly confirmed that he was indeed an economist and asked the man in the balloon how he knew. The man in the balloon replied, "Because your answer is precisely true and utterly useless."
