During my first semester at VCU in Fall 2023, life got busy. I didn’t jump in right away—mostly observing from a distance while seeing all the chapter’s events and programs unfold. I kept telling myself, “One day, I’ll dive in.” Then came SVA's 2024 National Convention, and everything changed. From the moment I stepped into SVA NatCon in Nashville, the energy, the programs, the camaraderie, and the sheer scale of the event blew me away. I knew then: this was something special. And I wasn’t wrong.
On the way back to Richmond after attending SVA Washington Week 2024, Bryan Sandford (a past co-president of VCU’s SVA and 2023 SVA Leadership Fellow) told me—half command, half challenge—that I needed to apply for the SVA Leadership Institute. There was a certain urgency in his voice. Not quite a threat, but I knew I had to take it seriously. So, I applied.
From October 17-20, 2024, I attended SVA’s 10th Annual Leadership Institute in Washington, DC. Thanks to the support of my professors, I was able to take the time off, and SVA’s National Headquarters covered all my travel and lodging expenses. I didn’t have to pay a dime for this experience. For three intense days, about sixty students from across the country engaged in over twelve hours a day of deliberate programming designed to sharpen our leadership skills. It was mentally and emotionally draining—but incredibly rewarding.
We were split into three cohorts, each led by some of the most impressive veteran leaders and professionals I’ve ever met. The bonds we built were strong, rooted in shared experiences, challenges, and aspirations. One key lesson I took away: ‘hope’ is not a strategy—action is. I made mistakes, but I was met with support and grace from my peers. I learned where I needed to grow, how to take better care of myself, and how to lead more effectively in all areas of my life. It was truly inspiring.
We toured the National Mall’s monuments at night, visited the White House, and had a town hall session with top government leaders in veteran and education benefits. The experience culminated in a dinner and graduation ceremony at the Library of Congress where we officially became SVA Leadership Fellows. I can still hear the echoes of our cheers bouncing off the marble and plaster in one of the most impressive architectural spaces in America. I left that weekend changed.
To my fellow SVA members: keep an eye out for the next Leadership Institute application window. It’s a straightforward process, and if you need help, I’m here. This has easily been the highlight of my college journey so far. Come Fall 2025, I’ll be encouraging every one of you to apply for the 11th Annual Leadership Institute. And if I’m fortunate, I might be invited back as an alum to guide the next cohort of veterans, spouses, and dependents through this transformative experience—one that builds leadership skills for life.
Let’s get to work.
