Mission
African American studies majors interpret and gain a solid understanding of the culture, politics and intellect of African Americans in the past and into the future.

As an interdisciplinary field, students pursue individual interests of art, history, medicine and more. Students are challenged to look at those of African descent throughout the Black diaspora as well as their impact on society. Students also analyze and compare other cultures and their influences on African American society. With small classes, students never miss a beat to be a part of discussion, events and advising within the department to achieve scholarly success.

African American studies alums have limitless career opportunities. Students acquire valuable critical thinking, writing and speaking skills, and go on to become teachers, lawyers, politicians, artist, historians and media personalities — just to name a few.

African American studies in the past and today imparts knowledge that contributes to positive social change.

Our mission is to help students learn how to define, measure, interpret and validate Black experiences. Graduates leave us ready to think and to act in order to solve the unstructured problems that confront Black communities.

The Philosophy Department is committed to teaching courses that (1) develop students’ abilities to think critically and systematically about philosophical problems, both abstract and practical, and to write clearly and cogently about them and (2) give the students some knowledge of the history and current state of philosophy.

In addition, the department is equally committed to producing high quality philosophical research results, to presenting these results at nationally and internationally recognized professional meetings, and to publishing the results as articles in nationally and internationally recognized journals or as books with nationally and internationally recognized presses.

The VCU Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) is a selective, one-year scholarship initiative that centers on nurturing the growth and leadership of emerging student leaders, rooted in a commitment to inclusive community building, personal transformation, and collective empowerment. The program fosters a space where leadership is understood not as an individual pursuit but as a collective journey.

The program selects 60 highly-qualified incoming first-year students who will embark on a leadership experience that integrates both curricular and co-curricular activities designed to cultivate deep, reflective leadership grounded in service and community care. Each first-year student is paired with a second-year mentor who will guide them not only through their academic year but also through their ELP leadership experience, cultivating relationships built on mutual respect and growth.

Above all, the Emerging Leaders Program is a community of students who come together to live, learn, and grow in connection with one another. The mission of the Department of History is the advancement of the study of the past through research and the training of undergraduates and graduate students in our discipline. The department fosters a level of research and professional activity essential to the graduate program (M.A. in history and public history certificate) and to the professional growth of faculty. The department provides majors and graduate students with a variety of courses and research experiences that prepare them for a range of professional careers. It also provides courses to other majors who require a history foundation, as well as general education courses to all VCU students who wish to become more knowledgeable about the past. The department is committed to enhancing meaningful connections among its faculty, staff, and students. Finally, department faculty have a responsibility to provide service to their profession and to the university community.
