Details
Historic East End and Evergreen Cemeteries are historic African-American cemeteries. Evergreen, created in 1891 and East End Cemetery establish in 1897, are both located in Richmond's East End. They are the resting place for many of Richmond's African-American leaders of the 19th and 20th centuries, including Maggie L. Walker, John Mitchell, Jr., and Rev. J. Andrew Bowler, Rosa D. Bowser, Hezekiah F. Jonathan, William Custalo, and Dr. Richard F. Tancil.
Volunteer tasks include clearing overgrowth and debris from pathways and grave markers and grave marker recording.
Due to the delicate nature of the headstones, use of heavy equipment is very limited and clean up by hand is necessary to preserve this part of our region's history. All tools will be provided.
Volunteers please dress for very cold weather. Wear layers! Wear long pants, closed toe shoes, and bring outdoor work gloves.
Please ensure that upon registering, you include the day of service in your personal calendar, so as not to forget. Volunteers will be required to report to the VCU Commons at 8:30am on the morning of the 17th for signing in and signing of the Volunteer Agreement. Departure will occur at 9:00am with transportation provided for all VCU-affiliated volunteers. Volunteers should expect service to be concluded around noon with the immediate return to campus and lunch provided. Should you have any questions, please contact Nico Orsini at orsinin@vcu.edu directly.
Your volunteer time is crucial to the success of this project as we assist the Enrichmond Foundation in reclaiming and maintaining the cemetery. Thank you for registering!
