Grow through travel & leadership
Engage through voluntarism
Learn about diverse communities
VCU Alternative Breaks, aka "Alt Breaks", is a student-lead VCU program that coordinates national and international service-learning experiences for students through Alternative Spring Breaks, Alternative Summer Breaks, and Alternative Weekend Breaks.
Alt Breaks are student lead trips where participants can leave behind the world of laboratories and classrooms and learn alongside communities addressing issues like urban poverty, racism, hunger, inadequate housing, and environmental damage.
VCU Alt Breaks participants are able to contribute their hard work toward community identified needs, and our national and international partners benefit from the tangible work completed.
VCU Alt Breaks connects teams of college students in communities to engage in community service and experiential learning.
Each year, VCU Alt Breaks organizes service trips that send more than one hundred VCU students to various sites around the country and beyond, amounting to more than 5,000 community service hours each year that address different issues.
VCU Alt Breaks are a great way for students to get involved with community service, explore new and discover their role as global citizens.
Organized and led by VCU students, Alt Breaks is supported by the Office of Student Leadership & Civic Engagement, The Commons. Nicole Patterson is our staff advisor for Alt Breaks and her email is firstname.lastname@example.org.
