Black History Month presents Misperceptions of Black Women. This weekly lunch and learn series invites a range of guest hosts with expertise and lived experience to share the origins of these misperceptions and explore the complex realities behind them. Each week we’ll work together to dismantle these myths, and build the common cultural knowledge that Black women are more than enough.

Please enjoy this recording of our Feb. 9 lunch and learn: The “Angry Black Woman.”

In this week’s lunch and learn we seek to understand the history, myths and consequences of being the “Angry Black Woman.” We will explore the history of this myth, as well as the lived experiences of those impacted by the “Angry Black Woman” misperception. Through discussion and reflection on these narratives and histories, we will debunk the culturally pervasive myth of the “Angry Black Woman.”

Our feated speaker this week is Dawn Johnson. Dawn Johnson is an adjunct professor, writer, learning professional, social media enthusiast, feminist pedagogy researcher and an aspiring educator from rural Virginia. She will be graduating in May 2021 with a PhD from the MATX department at VCU. Dawn currently teaches an amazing group of undergrads in an Intro to Gender Studies course. She has a background in law and policy with a JD from the University of Richmond and a BA in English from UVA.

Dawn's areas of interest include feminist research with an intersectional lens, social media studies, critical race feminism, and social justice matters. Her dissertation is entitled Black Feminist Thought, Interrupted - Dissecting the Voice of Black Feminists in the Blogosphere and their Engagement with Platform Affordances, and she defended her Dissertation at the end of January and passed!
